Question:

British Isles or Britain and Ireland?

I read recently that the Irish Government no longer use the term the British Isles and encourage media and Educational bodies in Ireland to refer to the Islands as Britain and Ireland. Agree or disagree with this move?

  1. Great Britain is a Sovereign Nation, The republic of Ireland is not part of Great Britain but it is in the British Isles, it makes sense to distinguish the two when discussing them separately, if you're talking about both then British Isles would be the correct term.

I disagree with the move wholeheartedly.

We could always call Europe "France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Spain................"

  2. 'Don’t be surprised If I demur, for, be advised My passport’s green. No glass of ours was ever raised to toast the Queen.

    Ireland and Britain.

Geographic terminology and politics walk hand in hand.

e.g. The occupied territories and Israel.

Lowjoy:WTF has your Stepfather got to do with this question?

Basing your opinion of an entire nation on one person?Shallow much?

As for bullying I think the world witnessed how badly Ireland was bullied by Britain even to the point of trying to do away with our language. No one consulted Ireland as to the naming it British Isles. We had it thrust upon us and now THEY know what THEY can do with it.

  3. A few people refer to IONA, Islands of the North Atlantic, don't seem to see it often these days.

  4. Well yeah , technically the Irish Government is right. It is Britain and Ireland. Seeing as Northern Ireland forms part of Britain and Southern Ireland is just Ireland (Eire)

    It does for me.

    Cheers.

  5. England, Scotland & Wales, just refer to each country by it's name,

  6. Strictly speaking, the British isles is Great Britain, Ireland and all the other islands around Britain it is just a Geographical area.

If we are talking UK etc it is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland.

The Irish Government is silly to bring this up it just causes discontentment, again.

IT IS A GEOGRAPHICAL AREA AND NOTHING ELSE

I note that al G has already mentioned it but will agree it is like saying, we are not going to call Europe "Europe", we will call it France, Spain, Greece, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Austria etc

silly and uneducated (Not you Al G!!)

  7. agree, ireland(eire) is an independant country. i think the term british isles is just used in a geographical way.

  8. I have never heard of such petty squabbling., over what they have always called the British Isles. It seems to me that some people have nothing better to do.All the time I have grown up and that is way back ! it has always been called this, but now Ireland is taking its bat home, and wants to start something. So go ahead call yourselves what the h**l you like, who cares because I do not.You are another lot who loves to start something as you are never happy. I had an Irish Stepfather and its a good job I was grown up and could stand up for myself because he was a bully   but it did not bother me the nasty piece of work, and I told him in no uncertain terms, what I thought about him. I also told him that if he ever harmed my Mother he would have me to deal with and I was no pushover. My Mother worked and he had a well paid job but he never gave my Mother a penny.Plus when they went on Holiday my Mother paid and he expected her to give him money to spend, and I told her what to do about that.Very nasty person.

  9. Don`t really give a ****

  10. Sure?

Not Isles of Great Britain of the United Kingdom?

    Look in the real world.

    Which is which?

    Are we lost in time?

    Luke 6.39-40,41-45,46-49

    What do you think?

  11. 100% all the way-- the republic of ireland has nothing to do with Britian so yeah, strip the title...

Ireland has nothing to do with UK

  12. No. Geographically Ireland is part of the British Isles. The archipelago that used to be inhabited by the Britunculi. Why don't they just rename Ireland Hibernia and have done with it?

  13. Being from Republic of Ireland, I have never used the term British Isles

nor has the term ever being used in our schools.    In fact I never ever heard the government of Eire refer to the term "British Isles",  always used the term Britain and Ireland
