British Olympic Association warns Team GB not to shake hands during London Olympics 2012
The chief medical officer of the British Olympic Association, Dr Ian McCurdie, has recently warned the athletes of the Team GB to avoid shaking hands as it may lead to transfer of a bug that could result in a decreased level of performance of the Team GB
athletes in the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games.
The bug under discussion does not lead to a severe setback however, it can be responsible for a mild health problem that would make all the difference in the competitive international sporting event to take place in London for the third time in the city’s
history.
McCurdie expressed himself on the matter of Team GB athletes shaking hands in the following manner, “I think that is not such a bad thing to advise. The difficulty is when you have got some reception and you have got a line of about 20 people you have never
met before who you have got to shake hands with. Within reason if you do and have to shake hands with people, so long as you understand that regular hand washing and/or also using hand foam can help reduce the risk - that would be a good point.”
According to Dr. McCurdie, the biggest threat that the Team GB athletes would face in the light of the Olympic Games is to get ill or injured during the time that the London 2012 Olympic Games are in progress from July 27 to August 12.
For the purpose of maintaining a high level of health of the Team GB athletes, the BOA has under taken to look into the details of the health issues that the Team GB athletes might face during the time of the Olympic Games.
The health and advice tips that will be available to the total of 550 Team GB athletes taking part in the Olympic Games will also be accessible to the support staff which comprises 450 personnel in all.
The BOA aims to take all the necessary precautionary measures in order to keep the Team GB athletes out of harm’s way and send a team at the height of its performance to the Olympic Games.
