British Women’s Water Polo team gets praises for performance at 2011 FINA Water Polo World League
The British Women’s Water Polo team received a huge round of applause from British Gas when they returned home after participating in the 2011 FINA Water Polo World League in Barcelona.
Overall, their performances were very good and substantial against three teams including Greece, Hungary and Spain at the 2011 FINA World League super final qualifiers.
The Brits claimed their emphatic victory over Greece by 10-9 in their first challenging match last week.
In the second FINA World League Super Final qualifier, they lost the vital match against Hungary by 14-9. Earlier, the Brits had to face the worst defeat over Hungary by a massive margin of 25-4 in 2010. That is why it was considered to be one of the most
improved performances of the British Women’s Water Polo team in the world league.
In the third and final match, they had to face another defeat against Spain by 16-11. Even in that match, their performance was lauded by all and sundry.
Fiona McCann said, “We started strong and took an early lead in the first quarter. We started where we left off from the Hungarian game really but unfortunately we just couldn’t capitalise on all of our chances.”
It was the second consecutive victory for the Spanish Women’s Water Polo team over Brits in May 2011. They beat them by 14-9 in the Manchester Aquatics Centre two weeks ago.
“Overall it’s been great to be competing against these top teams and we’re looking forward to having another go at them next weekend,” said McCann.
The British Women’s Water Polo Team will now compete with these three teams in Athens from May 20 – 22, 2011. It has been decided that the two top teams from it will qualify for the World League Super Finals in China from June 14 – 19, 2011.
Meanwhile, the Spanish Women’s Water Polo team has a strong chance of qualifying for the Super Final and even win it in China.
However, they will face tough challenge from the Hungary Women’s Water Polo team as they are also in supreme form at the moment.
The British Women’s Water Polo team is looking very confident to improve their performance in Athens. After they are done with this event, they will focus all of their attention on the London Games 2012.
