  1. Owl babies by Martin Waddell - good book about separation from Mum, nice pictures of night time, that I often use at beginning of new term. 3 different sized owlets.

Ugly duckling - good for discussion on self image / name calling / being kind to others and accepting differences

Introduce pictures of common birds they might recognise - sparrow / pigeon /  magpie / starling and ducks

songs - 5 little ducks went swimming one day / 2 little dicky birds (sparrows) /

5 grey pigeons (brown starlings etc.), 5 grey pigeons, 5 grey pigeons sat on a wall, And 1 flew away, 4 grey pigeons etc.

Magpie rhyme - 1 for sorrow 2 for joy etc.

Take a trip to park or Nursery garden if you have one! with binoculars (early learning centre sell them), feed the ducks

Discuss what birds eat, make bird cake, make a wormery.

Talk about eggs / nests - make chocolate rice krispie nests

let them make eggs / worms with playdough - use 'worms' to stick on large name cards / letters of their names

collect small twigs - see if you can make a class 'nest'

Introduce new words - drake / beak / webbed feet / claws.

    Try walking in swimming flippers.

Where would you go if you could fly? Provide a 'magic' carpet for role play.

What would you do if you didn't have your hands/arms? Try picking things up using your teeth / toes - or painting this way. Discuss disabilities.

  2. Different types of birds, sizes, flight or flightless, eggs, beak shapes relating to food.

Compare the ostrich, emu, penguin and other foreign species to birds seen locally.

Sit outside and listen to different bird sounds.

  3. Pre-scholars, are about 3-4 yrs ?

so anything too in-depth or difficult will loose their interest.

What about a collarge of different bird pictures for the wall.

    Painting with feathers/feather prints.

Building a nest, with leaves and twigs.

    Painting egg shells

    Nature table,

Draw a huge bird (body), then get the little ones to do 'hand prints' as feathers, in different colours, to cover it. (Peacock maybe)

Tell a story.. using a yellow sock/ stick on orange beak/sew on 'long legs'/eyes (glove puppet)

Names to match the pictures..ie picture of an egg (word : egg)..the children have to match up

Or get a little play together, using some of the above, to perform for the older students and some of the teachers, at the end of the week.

    Caramac x

  4. A Budgie!

What their feet are designed for: perching, gripping prey, wading etc.
