British boxing promoter Frank Warren reckons David Haye should retire now – Boxing news
British boxing promoter Frank Warren reckons David Haye, who is now a former WBA world heavyweight champion, should retire from the sport as he failed to secure a win against Wladimir Klitschko on Saturday, July 2, 2011.
The Hayemaker, Haye, who stepped in against Dr. Steelhammer, Klitschko, in a highly anticipated unification bout for the heavyweight titles last Saturday at the Imtech Arena in Hamburg, Germany was seen in a defensive mode for most of the time.
However, Klitschko on the same note was dominant from the start and as a result, he was awarded a unanimous decision by the score of 115-113 on the judges’ scorecards.
Warren believes Haye was an excellent cruiserweight but when it comes to the heavyweight division, he is not the man for it.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “I think he should retire. He has got money in the bank so why does he need to fight on? He was a great cruiserweight but hasn't got it at this (heavyweight) level.”
Warren also commented on Haye’s bout against the Russian pugilist, Nikolai Valuev, which was held back in November 2009. The fight went all the way before Haye clinched the WBA title with a majority decision over his opponent.
Warren stated Valuev was one of the worst heavyweights in the division however Klitschko’s fight was the defining fight for the 30-year-old Londoner.
He remarked Haye, who recently added a second defeat to his record was well beaten and well controlled by the Ukrainian and therefore he should now ponder over his retirement plans.
“Nikolai Valuev was one of the worst heavyweights and Harrison was a non-fight. The contest against Klitschko was his first defining fight in this division and I don't think he won a round,” Warren said.
“He got well beaten. He was not in it and didn't show up,” he added.
Let’s see if Haye retires or comes back looking for a rematch against Wladimir Klitschko.
