  1. england is rather large and most country pubs are good. buy a pub guide and get directions through that.

  2. If you don't get a chance to leave London then there are still some great independent pubs remaining.

This is a great website: http://www.beerintheevening.com/

My favourite in the city is the Lamb and Flag (nearest tube Leicester Square)  - it's tucked down a little side street. I like it because it's all kind of wonky!

  3. The Royal Standard of England is the best country pub I've ever been in.  Especially at this time of year, one of the bars is lit only by a huge roaring fire.  It's in Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire.   Check out its website:  http://www.rsoe.co.uk/

  4. There a thousands of great pubs. Any town or village you go to will have their favourites, my tip would be to visit as many as you can until you find the perfect one. My favourite is The Bellmans Cross In Shatterford near Kidderminster, I sometimes bump into Robert Plant in their. He,s a bit of a loud mouth git, but he gets away with it because He's a Rock legend.

  5. Just avoid the Harvester-type chains, anywhere on a housing estate and the places that look 'fake', with farm implements & old books; they are to pubs what Macdonalds is to restaurants - fine in their way but not what you're after.

There are some good pubs in London too; I would search out the Olde Cheshire Cheese where Dickens used to drink. Try a pub guide but be aware that all your fellow-countrymen will also be looking in the guides - the best way is to find a local (if you can) and get him/her to take you to a good one.

  6. It sounds like the UK is bigger than you think!

THere is a great pub called 'The George' in Norton St Philip, near the roman spa city of Bath which most people like to visit when travelling from abroad.  It is 100 miles from Heathrow and will take approx 2 hours by car - although you could get a train to Bath Spa and hire a car there.

Here is a map to the pub from Heathrow to help you: http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner...

And here is some info on the pub: http://thegeorgeinn-nsp.co.uk/

    and http://www.thegeorgeinn-nsp.co.uk/histor... for the history.

Go see it - it is a beautiful pub in an outstanding area!

    Enjoy your trip!

  7. Head for Oxfordshire - up the M40.

Head to The Falkland Arms, in Great Tew in North Oxfrodshire.

Best coutry pub in the UK.

  8. The avondale arms,Plymouth just outside the dockyard gates.not in the country, not  that good, but i tell you what you will never forget going there. The tattooed topless girls and the fact it was shown on britains toughest pubs should give you a good idea what it's like, they love americans too....tell me how you get on,or will i read about it in the papers?

Just get a train from paddington to Plymouth and a 10 min taxi ride to the pub,and a 15 min ambulance ride to a&e!!!(er)

why not try Jamaica inn on Bodmin moor Cornwall, open fire, good beer and it has ghosts.

Get there by stage coach, but watch out for the headless horseman...ooooh...spooky....:0

  9. All the ones in my area got transformed into expensive pretentious gastro pubs

  10. I agree with Tony Hamutstran above. I live near Exeter, (2 hours by train from Paddington) and you are in the most beautiful part of the UK. Great pubs, countryside, and Pasties. Go west young man. Also great beaches for surfing. Have a great trip.

Also, try this link. Its the Campaign for Real Ale site.

  11. You must visit the Greyhound in Wargrave near Reading in Berkshire.

The Royal  Standard is a nice pub, however it feels manufactured now and it very "touristy" and this is reflected in the prices.

The Greyhound on the other hand is very old (not quite as old as the royal standard),has a history (not William the conqueror),in the doomsday book, has two bars and real fires, one tiny and snug for of older people and the other public bar full of music and young people.

And best of all they are open very late on weekends,I have never heard a bell ring for "Time gentleman please".You will be most welcome as they are a friendly bunch.

  12. There are loads in and around Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.  Ideally you'll need a car to get to most of them as they're in the country, often in the middle of nowhere!

  13. The trip to jerusalem in nottingham, its built in the caves of nottingham castle

  14. Come to Cork ,Ireland ,everybody copies our pubs but never get it right. You can't beat the real thing.

  15. Romany Inn,Bampton,Near Witney in Oxfordshire

  16. Get a train from Paddington to Exeter. the villages around there have PROPER traditional country pubs. The Westcountry has the best scenrery by far. Exeter is a city & you can even see the countryside when you are right in the middle of it - not many cities can boast this.

What that guy said about the topless barmaids if true. He's not making it up.
