British minister promotes London Olympics, dismisses security concerns – Badminton news
It seems that London is all set to deliver a fabulous event as the UK Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Minister Jeremy Browne showed confidence in arrangements regarding stadium facilities and safe security measures for the 2012 London Olympics. On
his visit to India, Browne chose the badminton court of (PPBA) Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy to promote the Games.
Former All England Badminton champion, Prakash Padukone arranged the event. British Deputy High Commissioner Ian Felton and former National champion Vimal Kumar also joined them in a friendly match.
London is having the opportunity of hosting the Olympics after six decades as 1948 was the last time when the city won the rights to stage the event. Jeremy Browne’s current visit to India is one of those steps that British government is taking to make it
a successful venture.
Browne said, “We are ready to go. We are ready to host the event tomorrow. The stadiums have all been completed well in advance. Only temporary arrangements for conducting events like the marathon need to be finished.”
Prakash Padukone supported his statement by sharing his fond memories of England. The Indian badminton legend said, “I won the All-England Badminton Championships at Wembley Stadium in 1980. I remember how well it was organised. For the Olympics, venues
were ready a year in advance. I'm sure it will be a great event.”
Browne then teamed up with Prakash Padukone and faced Felton-Kumar as their rivals. Then, former Olympian and National champion Vimal Kumar had a detailed session with young boys of Karnataka Badminton Association and discussed the basics of badminton. The
students of Bangalore International School also lent grace and colours to the event by performing on the Olympic song in front of the dignitaries.
Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ), a non profitable organisation and the British High Commission joined hands for the event to promote relations between the two countries through sports.
The British Minister took full advantage of the occasion to promote London Olympics and assured that no stone will be left unturned in providing fool-proof security to all participants. The organisers intend to take the promotional campaign of London Olympics
to Chennai and Hyderabad before winding it up in New Delhi.
