I'm a british citizen residing in the U.S., and currently hold a U.S. permanent resident status (green card).

My last name on my british passport is different than the one on my green-card.

Can I go to the british consulate in the U.S. to change the last name on my passport to the one on green-card?

Thanks!

  1. Changes to a passport:

    You should complete Form C1

You should send your current passport and if:

    a) your name has changed through marriage, you must enclose the full original civil marriage certificate bearing a raised seal. You should also enclose evidence of termination of any previous marriages.

    b) your name has changed following the termination of your marriage, you must enclose your divorce certificate(s) and your original birth certificate if returning to your maiden name.

    c) your name has changed by court order or deed poll, you must enclose these documents. You should also provide documentary evidence to show that your name has been changed for all purposes i.e. that your US passport or Alien Registration Card is in your new name. If your existing passport is burgundy, you will need a new photograph.

It is also possible to have your passport endorsed “Holder is also known as...” on production of satisfactory evidence that you have changed your name such as your Alien Registration Card.

For all other changes to your personal details you should consult the notes provided with the application form.
