British poker terms?

i was recently watching wsop on espn and a british player was using terms such as "elf" and "hobgoblin" to describe kings and queens. is this a common custom in britain?

  2. If you had listened more carefully to the commentary you would have noticed the explanation.

    David Williams and one or two of the other players at the table were people who play the Magic the Gathering game.  It's some kind of weird fantasy game where people play as elves and hobgoblins etc.

    So I think he was subtly making fun of them for playing such a sad game.

    It certainly isn't British slang for cards.
