British team dominated during the opening day of the UCI Track World Championships 2012
Team Great Britain stole the show during the first day of the UCI Track World Championships in Australia.
The team of Edward Clancy, Peter Kennaugh, Andrew Tennant and Geraint Thomas rode brilliantly to show their dominance during the 4 kilometre opening Men’s Team Pursuit.
The British side set a new world record by finishing the race in a quickest time of 3:53:295 and overcame the former Australian best by two tenth of a second.
Team Australia, consisted of Glenn O’Shea, Jack Bobridge, Rohan Dennis and Michael Hepburn achieved the second position with a total time of 3:54:654.
The third place belonged to Team New Zealand of Aaron Gate, Sam Bewley, Westley Gough and Marc Ryan with a total time of 3:59:156.
Thomas was pleased with the team’s effort and mentioned that the performance will help the side during the 2012 version of the Olympic Games.
"It was a great race, it reminds me of Manchester back in '08, before the Games. We broke the world record there as well," he briefed.
"I think we made a lot of gains after that and I'm sure we can do the same now".
Edward Clancy was also part of the strong British side. The Gold medal winner of the 2008 Beijing winner briefed that the team rode brilliantly to claim the top position.
"I don't think we've ever had to fight as hard as that for a win," said Clancy. "It was pretty epic.
"Those last couple of laps, me and Pete [Kennaugh] were absolute passengers. We were just hanging in there. I just finished the last whole lap off the back".
Team Russia, Team Spain, Team Belgium, Team Denmark, Team Netherlands, Team Germany, Team Korea, claimed the positions 4-10.
The battle between the Team New Zealand and Team Russia was probably the second best race of the match.
The Kiwi squad of Gate, Sam Bewley, Westley Gough and Marc Ryan defeated the strong Russian line up of Artur Ershov, Evgeny Kovalev, Alexey Markov and Alexander Serov.
Team New Zealand received the honors in 3:59:159 to grab the bronze medal while Team Russia fell short to claim the fourth position with a cumulative time of 3:59:290.
