The 'Iron Lady' in decline: http://bulletin.aarp.org/yourhealth/diseases/articles/margaret_thatcher.html

"The daughter of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher said Britain's "Iron Lady" is suffering from dementia, the family's first public confirmation of what has been widely rumored in Britain for several years.

Thatcher's condition has deteriorated so much that she forgets that her husband, Denis Thatcher, died in 2003, her daughter said in a memoir that is to be published next month and was serialized over the weekend in the Mail on Sunday newspaper".

I found this quote by her daughter especially poignant:

"I had to keep giving her the bad news [that her husband Denis had died in 2003] over and over again,. Every time it finally sank in that she had lost her husband of more than 50 years, she'd look at me sadly and say 'Oh' as I struggled to compose myself. 'Were we all there?' she'd ask softly."

What a heartbreaking illness for her family members to have to deal with. Kind of humbling, isn't it? That will be many of us in the future.

  1. She did some evil stuff to the Irish.

Its a sad disease, I wouldnt wish it on anyone.

But i think she's inflicted a lot of sadness and suffering on others. So I dont feel as sad as I would if it had happened to a good person.

  2. Very true. That is the sad part of life. Or it is just the natural process. It is ironical that the charismatic iron lady has become this today. SUch things have happened with many like the famous boxer Mohammed Ali............

  3. Yes, I do feel sorry for her, my Grandpa suffers from Alzheimer's and it is a terrible thing for someone to go through. Hopefully they'll find a cure from stem cell research or the like though.

  4. Yes but for the Grace of God go I

a terrible thing to happen to anyone BUT most of them are happy in their own little world until someone tries to upset them, like Carol keep reminding her of her husbands death, which surely is not necessary.

I know someone who was the president of a college suffering the same way but seems quite happy and content living in a world of his own although not realising he has even got a visitor.

The worst affected are those close to the patient, family and friends suffer the most as they can only look on and are unable to help in any way

  5. Yes I find it ver ysad that someone so strong is now back to being like a child, dementia is very sad. I personally think thacher was the best PM we had.

  6. No, SV.  I feel for the people whose lives she destroyed.  She started a WAR remember, just to win an election.

    ~ Lest we forget ~
