Britta Steffen captures Women’s 100m freestyle gold – FINA Swimming World Cup, Beijing
Britta Steffen of Germany captured gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle on day two of the sixth stop of the 2012 FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup Series in Beijing, China on Saturday, November 3.
The German swimmer lived up to the expectations of her supporters as she dominated the final round of the main event, the 100m freestyle.
With her epic start, she gained a slight lead over her challengers and rushed her way towards the finishing blockade for gold medal.
She enjoyed a benefit of just an arm stroke over her toughest challenger and proved her mettle for the title by clocking an effort of 52.78 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Shuyi Li, who stayed 0.26 seconds slower and surfaced on the wall as second best finisher by producing a time of 53.04 seconds.
The silver medallist was chased by Tang Yi of China, who was 0.13 seconds slower and surfaced on the finishing end as third best finisher by touching the wall with a timing of 53.17 seconds.
Afterwards, the arena witnessed gruelling efforts of Melanie Schlanger of Australia and Ruiqi Wang, who involved each other in a neck-to-neck race for fourth position. The duo tried hard to overpower each other over the finishing wall but failed to do so.
They stayed only 0.74 seconds away from the third position holder and tapped the wall with same timing of 53.91 seconds for fourth spot.
Sixth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Kelly Stubbins of Australia, who stayed only 0.01 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and ended her race in a time of 53.92 seconds.
Stubbins was trailed by Haibing Wang of China, who was only 0.02 seconds slower and tapped the wall with a timing of 53.94 seconds for seventh position.
Last spot of the race was obtained by her teammate, Yuhan Qiu, who failed to upset any of her challengers and completed her swim in eighth place with a timing of 54.11 seconds.
In addition, Steffen was contented with her title claiming effort and raked awards and accolades at the prize ceremony of the event.
