Britta Steffen captures Women’s 50m freestyle gold – FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup
Britta Steffen of Germany captured gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle on opening day of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday, October 13.
The German swimmer met expectations of her fans by dominating the playoff of the 50m discipline. Steffen, who lost the race at the second stop of World Cup in Doha, restored order in the third stop and claimed victory in her pet event.
With her astonishing efforts in the shortest freestyle discipline, Steffen remained marginally ahead of her closest competitor as she tapped the wall for gold medal with a timing of 24.08 seconds.
Her title claiming effort remained just 0.16 seconds faster from the defending champion, Therese Alshammar of Sweden, who occupied silver medal of the discipline by clocking an effort of 24.24 seconds.
Alshammar was chased by Jessica Hardy of USA, who stayed 0.17 seconds behind and secured bronze medal of the event by producing a time of 24.41 seconds.
The third position holder was followed by Inge Dekker of Netherlands, who stayed 0.33 seconds behind and sprinted her way towards the wall for fourth position by clocking a time of 24.74 seconds.
Dekker was traced by Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, who remained just an arm-stroke slower from overpowering her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 25.03 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Jessica Morrison of Australia, who stayed 0.13 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and emerged on the finishing end with a timing of 25.16 seconds.
Morrison was traced by Hanna-Maria Seppala of Finland, who remained just an inch away from her foregoing finisher and finished her race in seventh place by reporting a time of 25.27 seconds.
Seppala was traced by Maud van der Meer of Netherlands, who was unable to surpass any of her challengers and finished eighth in the race. Meer stayed 0.04 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and clocked a time of 25.31 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Steffen was contented with her gold claiming effort and raked medal for his notable effort at the victory ceremony of the event.
