Britta Steffen dominates Women’s 50m freestyle - 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
The 2008 Beijing Olympics champion, Britta Steffen, presented her astonishing swim on the last day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial, to conquer the crown of the Women’s 50m freestyle event.
Steffen, who owns the 50m and 100m freestyle gold of the 2008 Olympics, has qualified in the German swimming team to compete at the upcoming 2011 Shanghai World Championships.
Steffen won the gold medal of the 50m freestyle at the 2009 Rome World Championships with a timing of 23.73 seconds, which is also the World, European and German record.
She won the gold medal of the 50m freestyle category, by touching the wall first in a remarkable time of 24.67 seconds. SG Neukolln e.V. Berlin’s Dorothea Brandt was only 0.11 seconds away from earning the gold medal as she touched the wall second, clocking
a time of 24.78 seconds. Lisa Vitting of SG Essen followed them on the podium for the bronze medal, submitting a time of 25.58 seconds. She out-touched her closest competitor, SV Halle’s Daniela Schreiber, who earned the fourth fastest spot in 25.59 seconds.
Steffen had a considerably good start that placed her marginally ahead of her fellow swimmers. With the help of her strong arm action, she remained dominant from the beginning of the race. She faced a tough competition from Brandt in the first-half, but
her unimaginably strong stroke gained her a slight lead and she touched the wall first for the gold medal.
Daniela’s team-member, Sabine Rasch, finished her swim in the fifth fastest time of 25.77 seconds and was 0.22 seconds ahead of Anna-Stephanie Dietterle, who appeared sixth in 25.99 seconds.
Dietterle was followed by Annika Bruhn and Kerstin Vogel, who transpired as the seventh and eighth fastest swimmers, completing their swims with timings of 26.06 and 26.24 seconds, respectively.
Steffen was very happy after her victory and uttered that she was hopeful of defending her national title. She added that will try to improve her timings at the upcoming world titles, to be held in July.
