Britta Steffen wins Women’s 100m freestyle heats - 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
Germany’s Britta Steffen demonstrated her stupendous swimming efforts to dominate the Women’s 100m freestyle event on the second day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The championship is aimed towards selecting national swimmers, who will qualify to be a part of the German swimming team to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
Steffen occupied the fastest qualification seat into the final, posting a time of 54.48 seconds. She was 0.55 seconds ahead of her following swimmer, Daniela Schreiber, who appeared second on the wall in a time of 55.03 seconds. SSG Pforzheim’s Silke Lippok
secured the third fastest qualification spot into the finals, by producing a time of 55.09 seconds.
Currently, Britta holds the world record of the 100m freestyle, as she clocked a time of 52.07 seconds at the 2009 Rome World Championships. Her time is also the European and German record of the 100m freestyle category.
The 27-year-old world champion was comfortably ahead of her fellow swimmers in the start of the race. Steffen completed her first lap with a remarkable effort of 25.77 seconds and was followed by Lippok, who completed her first-half of the race with timing
of 26.45 seconds. Schreiber appeared as the third fastest swimmer in the initial lap, clocking a time of 26.59 seconds.
The three swimmers continued their neck-to-neck battle, where Britta gained a comfortable lead in the start of second lap. She completed her second lap in 28.71 seconds to post 54.48 seconds on the board. Moment later, Daniela sprinted her way to the finishing
wall, overwhelming Silke in the second lap to secure second fastest spot in the final. Daniela out-touched the 16-year-old Lippok with a slight difference of 0.06 seconds.
Lisa Vitting of SG Essen claimed the fourth fastest spot in 55.45 seconds, ahead of Dorothea Brandt, who touched the wall to secure the fifth place in a time of 55.55 seconds.
The final of the same event will take place in the next session, where Steffen will be able to secure her spot in the German team to Shanghai.
