Brittany Beesley, Thibaut Mary shine in 12 years and under swimming events of Arafura Games – Day 3
Brittany Beesley and Thibaut Mary outperformed other swimmers in the 12 years and under qualifying rounds of the swimming events on day three of the 2011 Arafura Games.
The championship concluded with the preliminary rounds of 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle for the Girls and Boys of 12 years and under age category.
The morning session started with the Girl’s 100m butterfly, where West Australia’s Brittany Beesley earned the fastest qualification spot by finishing her swim first in 1:16.64 minutes. Beesley’s wonderful timing placed her only 0.06 seconds ahead of her
closest swimmer, Elly-Rose Martin, who touched the wall for second fastest qualification, posting a time of 1:16.70 minutes. They were followed by New Caledonia’s Emma Terebo, who entered into the finals as the third fastest swimmer by producing a time of
1:17.65 minutes.
Next was the Boy’s 100m butterfly, where the arena’s favourite, Thibaut Mary of New Caledonia, once again became the top contender for the gold medal by qualifying as the fastest swimmer into the finals. Mary had a comfortable victory of five seconds, clocking
1:09.48 minutes for the fastest qualification spot. He was followed by WA-s’ Gerard Standing and Mary’s teammate, Mathieu Michel, who appeared as the second and third fastest swimmers, clocking a time of 1:14.31 and 1:19.14 minutes.
Next was the Girl’s 50m freestyle, where Victoria’s Martin demonstrated her unique swimming skills. Martin, who qualified as the second fastest, was followed by Beesley into the final of the 50m event as the third fastest swimmer, submitting a time of 30.52
and 30.86 seconds respectively. Beesley, who appeared as the fastest swimmer in the 100m butterfly, produced a sluggish swim and failed to occupy the fastest berth into the 50m freestyle final. She was followed by NT’s Jayde Freeman, who qualified as the fourth
fastest swimmer in a time of 31.15 seconds.
The last event of the session was the equivalent event in the Boy’s category, where Michel overwhelmed the 50m butterfly fastest swimmer, Thibaut Mary. 12-year-old Michel sprinted his way to the finishing wall to qualify as the fastest swimmer with a timing
of 29.09 seconds. Mary followed him into the final, qualifying as the second fastest swimmer in a time of 29.12 seconds. They were followed by Stuart McRae of NT, who earned the third fastest qualification spot with a stupendous effort of 29.56 seconds.
The finals of the same events will be conducted in the evening session, where these swimmers will once again face each to earn the titles of their respective events.
