Brittany Lincicome and Stacy Lewis share the first round lead at Kraft Nabisco Championship
Brittany Lincicome and Stacy Lewis shared the first round lead with a 6-under for 66, at the first LPGA major of the year, The Kraft Nabisco Championship at the Mission Hills Course. The first day of the event turned out to be an
exceptionally hot day as temperatures shot up to 90 degrees.
Caddies were allowed to take off their jumpsuits in the afternoon when the temperatures peaked an unbearable 100 degrees. The heat had seemingly no effect on the two room-mates and pals leading the leaderboard. Lincicome and Lewis
are often seen having dinners and travelling together on the tourneys.
"Stacy has been a great friend for a little while now," Lincicome said. We're kind of the same age, very low-maintenance for both of us, so it's very easy-going."
The heat, however, had taken a toll on the greens, rendering them fast and unpredictable. Lincicome said she would prefer to play on greener courses rather than a fading brown one, “Being a course that I love and I love to play, I’d
hate for them to lose the greens,” Lincicome said. “Especially No. 1, and there was one other green turning brown, even – or purple, which can’t be good.”
Lincicome’s victory at the 2009 Kraft Nabisco Championship was her only victory in last four years and she is eager to bring an end to the dry spell. Lewis, on the other hand, is looking for her first win, coming from a spat of injuries
as she even underwent a surgery to fix scoliosis that she has had since college. Lewis has also been working hard on her balance and swing and has added a robust 25 yards to her shot.
“I really don’t mind the heat at all,” Lewis said. “I’d rather have hot and humid heat than dry heat, but I grew up in Texas during the summers, so I’m used to playing when it’s over 100 degrees. I say bring it, because the ball goes
a mile, so I like it.”
The six-foot German and last week’s champion of Kia Classic, Sandra Gal, continued with her excellent form. She pulled in a birdie at the par-four fourth, from 15 yards with a 58-degree lob wedge, finishing one stroke behind the leaders.
Australian Karrie Webb shot a 69, while World Number One, Yani Tseng finished with 70.
