Brittany Lincicome and Stacy Lewis share the lead at the Kraft Nabsico Championship
- Golf update
The four day US $2 million Kraft Nabisco Championship, teed off yesterday at the picturesque par-72, Mission Hills Country Club in California. American Brittany Lincicome and her compatriot Stacy Lewis tied for the lead after completing the first round of
the first major championship tournament of the year. Both had a score of six-under par 66 and lead by a margin of one shot over Mika Miyazato of Japan and Sandra Gal of Germany.
25-year-old Lincicome expressed deep contentment after leading the first day despite the scorching heat of the desert. "Being a course that I love and I love to play, I'd hate for them to lose the greens," she said. "Especially No. 1, and there was one other
green turning brown, even — or purple, which can't be good." On the other hand, Lewis felt completely at home as she was quite comfortable with the heat. "I really don't mind the heat at all," Lewis said. "I'd rather have hot and humid heat than dry heat,
but I grew up in Texas during the summers, so I'm used to playing when it's over 100 degrees. I say bring it, because the ball goes a mile, so I like it."
Sandra Gal continued her tremendous form from last week, where she triumphed at the Kia Classic. She tied for the third spot with Mika Miyazato at five under par 67. Gal was able to post seven birdies on the first day with only a couple of blemishes including
a bogey at the par-five ninth and another bogey at the par-four 13th. On the other hand, 21-year-old Miyazato carded an ideal bogey free round.
The defending champion and the world number one Yani Tseng of Taiwan looked in no mood of defending her title as she tied for the tenth spot with seven other golfers. The 22-year-old golfing protégé managed to post two under par 70 which looked unimpressive
by her standards. Tseng has been victorious five times this year, with four victories in a row.
The Hall of Famer Karrie Webb of Australia is in a shooting range of winning the eighth major championship of her career as she is tied for the seventh spot on the leader board with Reilley Rankin of the United States and Anna Nordqvist of Sweden. 36-year-old
Webb carded three under par 69 on the first day with the only one bogey scored at the par-4 first. World number eight Webb recently broke into the top ten rankings with two back to back victories at the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore and the inaugural
RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup at Phoenix.
Dry and hot weather is forecasted for the second day of the event to tee-off today.
