Brittany Lincicome leads CVS Pharmacy Challenge
Brittany Lincicome is leading the CVS Pharmacy Challenge that took place at the Blackhawk Country Club yesterday. Carding carded 11 birdies at the 6,185 yard golf course in Danville California, Lincicome achieved her best round of the season so far.
She also became the first player after Paula Creamer to post an 11-under in a round. Creamer accomplished such an amazing score during the 2008 Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. Leading the tournament at the moment, Brittany is on the 62nd position
on the money list.
Using her skills on tee and very soft swing on tee, she managed to stay away from trouble during the game. Brittany finished with only 24 putts during the day. After the first nine holes, the charismatic 25-year old already had five birdies.
The only time Brittany stumbled from her perfect game was when she came to par-5 fifth hole. On 5th, she swung her tee shot into the rough and had to scuttle to at least achieve par. Following her par on the fifth, she birdied the final four holes,
which included the par-5, 505 yard No. 9.
This shot of hers went through the green and then onto the backside of a bumpy hill where she hit about twelve feet and then sunk a birdie to put the cherry on top of her remarkable lead.
"The only time I looked at the scorecard was when we made the turn", said Lincicome."I was making everything. It was pretty crazy, even more myself. I was making 30-footers, 5-footers. Just one of those days where everything was going my way and I couldn't
do anything wrong".
For Lincicome, the reward for her amazing performance was just a double tennis match with her friends later in the evening. Just because she is an LPGA tour member, doesn’t mean she can’t be fond of any other sport. Brittany said that they’ve only played
tennis twice this week. Along with enjoyment for her, it gives her more cardio and does help her get into shape.
Her newly set record yesterday is also within two shots of that made by Annika Sorenstam. Annika had made an LPGA Tour record at the Standard Register Ping in 2001 when she had a 13 under 59.
Brittany, who has been a three-time winner on the LPGA, has had a very bumpy season. This year, in her first four tournaments, Lincicome was outside the top twenty three times and missed the cut in the other.
Lincicome finished second at the Bell Micro Classic and tied for the 14th place at the LPGA Championship. Brittany also tied for 25th at the U.S open and was a runners up at last week’s Navistar Classic. Evidently, Brittany has starting
doing better now and this tournament might just be where she hits the top.
As for other players, Cristie Kerr shot a 1-over par 73 and really needs to end up in the top five if she wants to replace Ai Miyazato as World No. 1 in women’s golf. Moira Dunn had a 66 and Amy Hung, Michele Redman, Jin Young Pak and Katherine Hull were
at 5 under following the first round.
Wendy ward remained four shots behind the leader as she had a bogey-free 65. Ward also carded five amazing birdies on her first nine holes. Being in very close competition with Brittany, she added two more birdies. Things got messy when she hit a 40-foot
putt on the par-4 No.12, which ended in her mismanaging two short missed putts on No.6 and No.9.
Wendy said that the pace of the greens is really good and that she has been fine tuning her stroke. Ward said that seeing your putts go in the hole is an important confidence booster.
Unfortunately, CVS Pharmacy won’t be lengthening its agreement with the Tournament and hence it would be left without a sponsor after this year. The CVS Pharmacy Challenge is the tour’s only event in Northern California, and by the looks of it, it could
be its last.
Even though it could be the last one, all the ladies are still trying their best and will continue their game as the second round tees off on Friday.
