Brittany MacLean clinches Girls 400m freestyle title: Day four – 3rd World Junior Championships
Brittany MacLean of Canada clinched the title of Girls 400m freestyle on day four of the 3rd World Junior Championships, organised by the Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) on Friday, August 19, in Lima, Peru.
The 17-year-old MacLean won the gold medal of the event, by reporting in a superb time of 4 minutes and 10.32 seconds. She was 3.98 seconds slower than the championship mark of 4 minutes and 06.30 seconds, made by Elena Sokolova of Russia in 2008. She was
also 11.17 seconds behind the world record of 3 minutes and 59.15 seconds, set by Federica Pellegrini of Italy, during the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The Canadian champion was chased by Bonnie MacDonald of Australia, who remained 1.54 seconds slower than MacLean and reached the podium for the silver medal, by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 11.86 seconds. The bronze medal of the event was secured by
Gillian Ryan of United States, who flew away from the rest of her competitors and appeared on the wall, with a timing of 4 minutes and 12.28 seconds.
Ryan was followed by Aya Takano of Japan, who remained only 0.04 seconds behind the bronze medallist and finished her swim in fourth place, with a timing of 4 minutes and 12.32 seconds. Chelsea Chenault of United States remained only 0.58 seconds behind
Takano and earned fifth fastest spot, with a timing of 4 minutes and 12.90 seconds.
In the meantime, Claudia Dasca of Spain surfaced as the sixth position holder of the event, as she was 0.56 seconds behind the fifth finisher and clocked a time of 4 minutes and 13.46 seconds. Dasca was in a lead of 0.21 seconds over her following swimmer,
Mikkayla Sheridan of Australia, who was the seventh best swimmer of the event, with a timing of 4 minutes and 13.67 seconds. Valeriya Podlisna of Ukraine ended up as the eighth finisher in a time of 4 minutes and 19.57 seconds.
The session ended with the noteworthy swims of all finalists, while the winners received their medals after the championship.
