Brittany MacLean pockets Girls 200m freestyle gold medal: Day six – 2011 FINA World Junior Championships
Brittany MacLean of Canada won the gold medal of Girls 200m freestyle meet on the finishing day of the 3rd World Junior Swimming Championships, organised by the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA), in Lima, Peru.
The 17-year-old MacLean presented a dominating swim in the four-lap event, by lowering the championship record of the event, with a timing of 1 minute and 58.93 seconds. Her time was nearly one second under the former championship record of 1 minute and
59.78 seconds, set by Dagny Knutson of USA in 2008. She was 5.95 seconds slower than the world record of 1 minute and 52.98 seconds, made by Federica Pellegrini of Italy during 2009.
MacLean was trailed by Chelsea Chenault of United States, who remained 0.76 seconds behind the gold medallist and posted a time of 1 minute and 59.69 seconds for the silver medal. Chenault managed to out-touch her closest competitor, Yuanhui Fu of China
with a difference of only 0.01 seconds, as Fu submitted a third fastest time of 1 minute and 59.70 seconds for the bronze medal.
The fourth best spot of the swim was secured by Aya Takano of Japan, who was 0.85 seconds slower than the third position holder and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 00.55 seconds. Similarly, Gillian Ryan of United States transpired as the fifth position holder
of the event, as she ended her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 01.25 seconds.
She was trailed by Mikkayla Sheridan of Australia, who remained 1.02 seconds slower than the fifth position holder of the event and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 02.27 seconds for sixth position. Urza Bezan of Slovenia was the seventh fastest swimmer of
the event, as she produced a time of 2 minutes and 2.72 seconds. Finally, the race was concluded with the swim of the eighth position holder, Ksenia Yuskova of Russia, who posted an effort of 2 minutes and 03.06 seconds.
In addition, the session ended with the scintillating swims of all participants in the 200m event.
