Brittney Reese dominates at the USA Championships – Athletics news
As the four-day event of the USA Championships at Hayward Field, Eugene, concluded, Brittney Reese, Jesse Williams, Kellie Wells and Shalonda Solomon marked their dominance in their respective disciplines to bring a thrilling end to the entertaining meet.
Reese, the Mississippi born 24-year-old girl, who first appeared at the 2008 Summer Olympics, is the reigning world champion amid her impeccable performance on the field. While appearing at the USA Championships, Reese, who had already been depicting unprecedented
form and fitness, went on to mark a career best 7.19m stride. The win culminated in adding another feather in her cap, as she celebrated her fourth consecutive success in the discipline.
Showing-off her fitness right from the beginning, Reese opened up her contest for marking a remarkable 7.02m jump and as if it was not enough to secure the title for her, she stretched it to 7.19m by the sixth round. It was indeed a big achievement, as she
had to encounter with gushing winds blowing at a pace of 1.8m/sec. Janay DeLoach, her closest rival, could not even touch the 7m mark. She claimed second position on the podium for hitting the 6.97m mark, while for landing at 6.88m, Fummi Jimoh, finished third
in the respective category.
Commenting upon her success, the young athlete who had initiated with her sporting career after finishing-off her college, said, “I knew that I had done better on my landing than I normally do. I was very surprise how far it was. I knew that I had that kind
of jump in me. To get it here was really emotional.”
The victory marked by Brittney Reese was rather expected, however, the athlete who produced a real show was Kellie Wells, who dominated the 100m field for hitting the finishing line in 12.98 seconds. Sharing her feelings over her marvellous success, Wells
said, “I worked on making peace and not thinking about getting hurt, I am just pleased to have this win and major championships and conquered my fears. A personal best was more than I could ask for. I wanted revenge and I got it.”
In the high jump event, Jesse Williams marked a significant success while taking full advantage of the home field and recorded a meet record of 2.37m. Williams, who bagged her third title in the past four years, while expressing her delight, said, “I love
getting records but I didn’t expect it to feel the way that I did. I knew if I stayed relaxed and pushed really hard like I did on the first two that I would make it.”
She was of the view that not only she herself was happy over her achievements, but the way the crowd had appreciated her effort, it seemed to her as if they too wanted her to emerge as the winner.
