Brixen heading for success in the Heavitree Brewery Handicap Chase at Exeter on 8th May
The Class 4 Heavitree Brewery Handicap Chase will be held at Exeter over two miles, a furlong and 110 yards on Tuesday, 8th May. The 3,249 purse race has attracted a line-up of six five-year and older thoroughbreds.
Only two entries among all the candidates have raced at Exeter and even those could not get translated into wins. Brixen and Chase Gate have raced there during the previous season.
Brixen, Heron Island’s eight-year-old bay mare out of mare, Rythem Of the Night, has been active four times during the new season out of which she has even bagged one of the races.
Her final race of the previous season was at Exeter over two miles and three and a half furlong in the European Breeders’ Fund/Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Mares’ Novices’ Chase on 15th December.
Brixen scored second behind the winner Molly Round who led her by 1 ¼ lengths. Brixen was ridden by Noel Fehily.
Settling third behind the winner was Miss Saffron while the 4/9 favourite of the race, Araucaria, ended fourth on the track of seven.
The eight-year-old’s seasonal debut was in the European Breeders’ Fund/Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Mares’ Novices’ Chase on 18th January at Newbury over two miles and four furlongs.
The race was won by the 6/4 favourite of the race, Kateal, who took charge of the final eight lengths and had Araucaria finishing the closest. Lady Karinga caught up with the third position while Brixen parked fourth.
Her second try of the season brought the first success. She won the British Stallion Studs E. B. F. /Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Mares’ Novices’ Chase on 20th February at Carlisle over two miles and four furlongs.
The 6/4 favourite winner of the race grabbed the victory by a mere neck’s difference from the runner up, Classical Mist.
Concluding the race third behind the winner was Overyou.
Despite the experience at Exeter, Brixen will most likely find herself in contention with Kirbys Glen who was successful in the seasonal debut at Taunton. The 7/2 joint favourite won the London Inn At Watchet Handicap Chase on 12th March over
two miles and three furlongs.
Brixen has been winless in the last two races and she has the potential to claim the race today.
