Bro burnt a part of a 50 dollar bill can a bank trade it in?

about 1 minute ago at 2:14 central time my 5 year old bro burt part of his 50 dollar bill i told him its not a trick that you can handle and i was just wondering will a bank trade a burnt 50 dollar bill for another new 50 dollar bill?thanx

  1. As long as more than 50% is there you can still use it.  No need to trade it, it is still legal tender.

    Doxie is not accurate.  Using her logic you could tear a bill in half and go get two to replace it.  You have to have more than HALF.


  2. You need to have at least one serial number in tact.

  3. From the U.S. Treasury website:

    "When a note is partially destroyed, the Treasury Department will replace it if clearly more than half of the original remains."

    and

    "Damaged or mutilated notes should be taken to a bank for redemption."

    So yes, a bank will swap bills with you.  It would probably be best if you went to the bank you use for checking/savings/etc., since they'll already have your information on file (I'm pretty sure they have to do some sort of paperwork for damaged bills).
