Following England’s recent series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, the two players headed back to their domestic sides in order for the English selectors to choose between the two based on their performance and seal the roster for the upcoming event.
As till now, considering their current domestic performance, Broad leads Bresnan with a two wickets margin since both the English stood in a stalemate.
At present, Broad is playing for his local side http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843 in the 1st innings of the four days game at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
The English secured 5 impressive wickets at a run rate of 3.09. While a mild performance with a single wicket during the second innings of the session after securing Trescothick’s crucial stump.
As for Bresnan, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Worcestershire-c866 at the North Marine Road Ground, Scarborough.
Bresnan secured 4 wickets in the 1st innings with a runs per over average of 4.57. The player, however, remained wicket-less in the second innings.
The two players are contending desperately, not only to find a place on the international team, but to also have an opportunity to participate in the 2000th legendary Test match against India at Lords on July 21st, 2011 at Lords. Ironically,
the 1st Test fixture ever to be played at the venue was on the same date in 1884.
Previously, Broad was axed from the 5th and deciding One Day International (ODI) match against Sri Lanka as a result of a heel injury that resulted in Jade Dernbach taking his place. However, the player’s exclusion was also considered as a result
of his disappointing performance throughout the series.
As for the counterpart Bresnan, the English missed out on the Test series against the Lankans due to a calf injury. However, he made a remarkable recovery after securing 8 wickets in the 5 ODIs against the tourists.
In contrast, Broad holds some backing from the team’s official, especially from the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Flower-c44362, who seemed a little too confident on Broad’s inclusion on the English side against the Indians.
However, Broad might hold some appreciation amongst the team’s management (for also being the T20 captain), Bresnan’s previous performance during the Ashes must also not go in vain.
The potent English player offered an exceptional display with the ball in the final two Tests during the recent Ashes that resulted in England’s 3-1 triumph. In addition, unlike Broad, Bresnan has decent command with the bat as well.
As for now, none of this matters to the English selectors. The officials will be delivering their final verdict later this week after seeing the two perform on their home turfs.
As they say, may the best man win; but for the English selectors, the verdict remains to be crucial one since both the cricketers, at the end of the day, come to a stalemate.
