Speaking to media reporters on Saturday, the lanky England pacer hailed the Natal-born hard-hitting batsman as a “world-class T20 batsman”, and admitted that it was disappointing to lose the veteran a couple of months prior to the extravaganza.
However, Broad said that it would give other players an opportunity to fill the boots of the retiree and grab a spot in the squad.
"Kevin is a world-class Twenty20 player so of course it is disappointing that he is not with us," said Broad ahead of England’s only T20 International against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760, at Nottingham on Sunday.
"We've got an exciting group of players in that changing room and everyone is really excited about getting on that field and doing the job,” he added further.
Sunday’s match against the on-tour Caribbean side will be England’s first T20 International since Kevin Pietersen’s retirement from the limited-overs format of international cricket.
The South Africa-born 31-year-old batsman, who was man of the tournament when England won the World T20 title in West Indies two years ago, bid farewell to ODIs and T20Is on May 31, citing the unrelenting international schedule of England
as the reason.
Pietersen’s retirement is widely regarded as a huge blow to England’s preparations in a build up to the esteemed tournament, to be held in Sri Lanka in September this year. But Broad is hopeful his young chargers, including likes of Jonny
Bairstow, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alex-Hales-c985 can fill the breach.
England have just four games in their pocket before they leave for the Island nation in September, to defend their world crown, and Broad urged his inexperienced players to make full use of each and every opportunity they get, in a build-up
to the high-profile tournament.
"We have quite a short period of time and a short number of games until that World Cup so you want to make as much use of that as possible when we do get the opportunity."
