Brock Lesnar: A huge wrestler, former NFL player and MMA Talent
Brock Lesnar is the current UFC or Ultimate Fighting Championships Heavyweight Champion. He was also an accomplished professional wrestler and was employed for a number of years by the WWE. He started wrestling at an early
age and soon started to make a name for himself. He was a very popular wrestler in the WWE and was very popular with the fans. Lesnar was the youngest heavyweight champion in the history of the franchise at the age of 25. The huge wrestling star then decided
to try something new and is one of the few athletes to be able to make a name for himself in three different sports.
Lesnar was born in 1977 in South Dakota, USA, and started wrestling in high school. He is a 6 foot 3 inch, 19 stone wrestler and he dominated his high school wrestling team. He had a record of 33 wins and 0 losses in his
senior year of high school. Even though he graduated last in is class from school, he managed to secure a full wrestling scholarship to the University of Minnesota. In 1999, he came second in the heavyweight division of wrestling in the NCAA but managed to
win the championship in 2000.
Soon after graduating from university in 2000, Lesnar joined the WWE’s training and development centre. He made his full debut in 2002 on the main roster and had his first match against Jeff Hardy. In the summer of 2002,
he won the Summer Slam main event and that gave him a shot at becoming the next heavyweight champion of the world. The heavyweight match was scheduled against the Undertaker, which the young star won. By securing the win, Lesner became the youngest heavyweight
champion in the company’s history at the age of 25.
In 2003, Lesnar found out the painful truth to the so called fake world of wrestling. During a match against Kurt Angle, he messed up his finishing move and overestimated the distance of his jump. He landed on his head and
suffered a massive concussion. He had to be stretched out of the ring and it took a long time for him to recover. The move that he was trying to do was his finishing move called the ‘Shooting Star’.
In 2004, rumours surfaced that Lesnar was to leave WWE to pursue a career in the NFL but he actually left the WWE to go to New Japan Pro Wrestling. He competed and won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at the end of
2005. In 2006 and 2007, he successfully defended his title twice but then he was forced to leave the NJPW because the company claimed he had visa issues. During the summer of 2007, he fought his final match as a professional wrestler.
The former wrestler than tried to forge a career in the NFL and played for the Minnesota Vikings and created quite a stir during his time with the team. He started a few minor fights with the quarterback of the Kansas City
Chiefs. His American football career was cut short after the preseason as he ended up being a late cut in the season.
Next, the big former wrestler and now former football player decided to try his hand at Mixed Martial Arts. He signed a deal with K-1 promotion and his first fight was on June 2nd 2007. He won his
first match through submission in 1 minute and 9 seconds and started his MMA career with a bang. The next year Brock made his debut during the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Shortly after he made his debut, Lesnar took on Randy Couture for the UFC Heavyweight
title.
The new heavyweight champion then pulled out from all his matches due to an illness in 2009. It was found out that the MMA star had contracted mononucleosis because of a condition where faecal matter was seeping into his
intestine. It was causing him pain, abscesses and it required surgery to correct the condition. January of this year saw him return to the sport and he is slated to defend his title soon.
The interesting thing about Lesnar is that he has managed to become a star in three different sports; first wrestling, then the NFL and now MMA. What is interesting about this is that mixed martial arts is an extremely tough
sport that requires athletes to compete with various fighting styles from boxing to martial arts. It seems that a wrestler can compete just as well against other fighters in the sport. The future looks really bright for this very talented athlete.
