Brock Lesnar reportedly asks for bout with Roy Nelson

Fresh off losing his belt to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 on 23 October, former Ultimate Fighting Championships heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar has reportedly asked to fight Roy “Big Country” Nelson in his
next fight. Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Online, an online radio show, reported the news on Tuesday.

Alvarez also said that Lesnar (5-2) will be offered a rubber match by the UFC with former champion Frank Mir, whom he lost to in his UFC debut and then crushed at UFC 100. The heated rivalry between the two
men, and constant public lobbying by Mir for the fight, means such a bout could likely headline a pay per view event and mean big money for the UFC.

The news was not confirmed by either the UFC or Lesnar, and goes against earlier reports that Lesnar was looking to take some time off after his first round loss to Velasquez. UFC president Dana White had
suggested though that the embarrassing loss might motivate Lesnar to return sooner than expected.

Nelson himself was originally slated to fight Shane Carwin, who lost to Lesnar over the summer, on 1 January at UFC 125. Carwin pulled out of the fight to have back surgery, and instead of finding a new opponent
the UFC scrapped Nelson’s fight, which caused Nelson to publicly express that he’d felt let down by the UFC.

Nelson is coming off his own loss in a title eliminator bout to Junior Dos Santos, where he was beaten up on the feet over three rounds by the Brazilian, who is often considered to have the best hands in
the division. Nelson hung gamely, still trying for the knockout all 15 minutes of the fight despite taking heavy shots, and earned respect from fans and White despite losing a 30-27 unanimous decision.
