I got a new GE Range-when I use the broiler and a surface burner at the same time it trips the breaker. The breakers are double and each one says 40 amp. only the range is on the breaker. Do you think it is a bad breaker, a too low breaker or something wrong with my range? Can I just put a bigger breaker -50 amp in? Thanks

  1. DONT THINK ITS THE CORD,

HOW OLD IS THE BREAKER BOX IN THE HOUSE? ALSO IN THE BRKR.BOX MAKE SURE THE WIRE GOING TO THE BRKR. IS GOOD &TIGHT,ALSO CK THE COMMAN STRIPS AND GROUND. DO YOU HAVE ALUM.WIRING? CAN YOU PUT AN AMP METER ON THE BRKR.WIRING WHILE ITS HOT AND GET AN AMP READING?IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS EITHER A BAD BRKR.,OR LOOSE WIRES IN THE BOX,OR OUTLET(PLUG)CK.THESE OUT FIRST,I THINK IT WILL SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM,A NEW RANGE SHOULD PULL LESS AMPS THAN AN OLD ONE.IF IT WAS THE CORD,IT WOULD TRIP THE BRKR. WHEN EVER YOU TURNED ON ANYTHING.

  2. It could be a bad breaker, but that's unlikely. You should check the model specifications to determine the max. fuse amp capacity for the range. That should indicate the size breaker you need. If it's determined you need a bigger breaker, chances are you need a heavier gage wire as well. Don't just slap in a 50 amp breaker without checking the model specs. and the wire size, you could start an electrical fire. If the breaker is properly sized, the wire gage may be too small. I'm pretty certain an 8 awg wire will accommodate 40 amps. Unless you are very confident in what you are doing, I would not suggest opening your breaker panel to make changes. This should be done by a TRAINED PROFESSIONAL! Good luck.

  3. Is the breaker on the unit itself? If so NO. Something is wrong.
