I'm broke.

I'm a vegetarian.

And I'm hungry.

I need a vegetarian equivalent to Ramen.

i.e. Dirt cheap and capable of sustaining some level of life.

Suggestions?

  1. Do you know the Hare Krishnas have free vegetarian food distribution for poor people daily all over the world.?

If you're in NY (is it that 7th Ave?) then try 26 2nd Ave.

They are in every major city and such delicious satisfying food.

Edit:PS> mung beans and rice sustain life and are dirt cheap. They are the Indian staple (cooked together). Lots of people eat nothing more than that and they have energy. Quite healthy actually.

  2. Bulk is the best.  Local farmers markets or health food stores will have beans, veggies and fruits for CHEAP.  Buy up what you can, and freeze it.  Save the fruits for smoothies and veggies for stews/soups.  Get some tomatos, stew them up add some italian seasoing, throw it on some whole wheat pasta.  Don't know where you live, but out west or in the south, the farmers markets are everywhere.

  3. Grass, actually if you graze my lawn down to a reasonable, trimmed look, I will pay you as well!

  4. As others already pointed out - beans and rice.  For me personally, the choice would be pinto beans and rice with corn bread - - but everyone has their own particular favorite combination.

An even cheaper approach - go to a friends home.  :)

Don't know where you live, but down south when someone even comes for a visit, the 'rules' of society are that one offers food and drink at the very least.  I have even been known to offer a place to sleep.  Also, none are to leave empty handed - have to send leftovers home with them.  You get about 5 meals out of just one visit to a friends home.....

  5. Black beans and rice is one of my fave foods and it's dirt cheap if you use dry beans and rice.  You can eat on it for days.  If you can afford to throw in some onion and cilantro ~ mm mm mm.  Cheap *and* tasty!

    All my best to you.

  6. Try a local food bank they don't ask  questions they give you food.

  7. You can make many dishes with few items.  Seasoning is key.

Go buy whole wheat pasta, brown rice, veggie broth and a bunch of store brand frozen veggies.
