Question:

Broke a halogen bulb indoors. Should I be concerned?

We all know that the CFL bulbs contain mercury and that you're supposed to do a special cleanup should they break. But I can't find any information on breaking a small halogen bulb (about the size of an incandescent). We had an indoor one fall and break on the tile floor in my office, and I'm wondering if it's dangerous? First answer with documentation will get 10 points. Thanks.

  1. The amount of Mercury in the light fitting is about the size of a period >.< there is no risk. Clean up the mess in the normal way. The mucury is far less than the back ground mucury levels found in nature.

Please, don't be fooled by the alarmists, too ready to frighten the pants off you.

    Kind regards,

  2. Here a link for a MSDS for mercury

I would just simply clean-up the contaminated area. Just avoid direct skin contact with the mercury.

  3. Nothing to be too concerned with here.  I just want to make the point of there being very little mercury in a CFL or regular fluorescent bulb.  There is more mercury in an old dental filling than in a fluorescent bulb.  Yes, don't just dispose of them in the trash, do it properly.  But if one breaks, just clean it up and go about your business.

  4. There is no mercury present in a halogen lamp.

clean-up is as usual, pick up the broken pieces and dispose of in the rash is fine. If this was a CFL bulb then this would have a required disposal from your local waste management group.
