I dropped a 16kg dumbell on my foot. I had to go to the hospital as my nail was smashed and it wudnt stop bleeding. They lasered a whole in each nail, which was horrid pain. I just want to know when I start to put weight on my heel? As usual with me its a case of one step forward one step back, as I was really getting into a good training regime and was reaching the peak conditioning of my body. Any advice? or other stories of broken big toes?

  1. I sympathise - it can take months for it to feel right again and heal properly

  2. The bones will take 6 weeks to mend.  Getting use back into the toes depends entirely upon your pain threshold.

That's 42 days off work or school, if you play your cards right.

  3. It is difficult to say for certain how long it will take to heal as each person recovers at their own rate, however, it will usually take between 6-8 weeks for bones to mend.  If you have not too severely damaged the nerves in the nail bed your new nail will grow back up in about 6-12 months.

I doubt that you have been put in plaster so you will need to take care with the toes.  When you start weight bearing you might like to strap the two toes together just to support them.  It might make you feel more comfortable about walking with them.  Always remove the dressing when not weight bearing.

If you want to keep up a fitness regime then try non weight bearing exercises, such as sit ups, weights whilst sitting and swimming.

  4. Injuries such as yours should heal in about 6 weeks. However thi is only if the foot is rested and not used.

  5. a mounth or to

  6. mine still hurts after 1.5 months / 2 months
