Question:

Broken Blood vessel in the eye??

I have a broken blood vessel in my eye that I've had for a little over 2 weeks....it's got better, but it's not gone. Should I worry? It was a pretty bad one, so I think it's good that it's gotten better so far, but most things I've read say something like "it should be better in 2 weeks" so I'm not sure if that means completely better or improving. Should I worry or just monitor it to make sure it keeps improving?

  1. If this the first time it has occurred and it does seem to be improving, continue to monitor it.  If isn't gone by the third week, get it checked.   A single occurrence is generally nothing to worry about.  If it begins to occur serially, get it checked.  There may be an underlying cause.

  2. A broken blood vessel is like a bruise.  So its rate of healing depends on severity and you.  If you are a slow healer then it will take longer.  If you take aspirins then it will take longer.  If the whole conjunctiva, white of the eye, was blood red then it will take longer.  I have had patients that were in fights or accidents that have had a broken blood vessel, subconjunctival hemorrhage, take 3-4 weeks to heal.

  3. you should be fine. they usually go away by themselves. see a doctor if you are worried
