I broke my collar bone about 4 weeks ago (August 17th) during football. I wore my brace for the required time, have seen my doctor, and have been doing necessary exercises. I am seeing the orthopedic again in 2 weeks but forgot to ask him a question I want to know now. I am a rugby player and in rugby you use a lot of exposed shoulder hitting. Rugby season is in February/March and I am not doing football for the rest of the season. I plan to start taking calcium tablets to strengthen it. Does anyone know if it will be healthy enough to play??? Please help!!!!

  1. Don't worry you will be able to play again. I did mine when I was around 19 at the end of the season and was able to play by October without problem and have not had any reoccurance since.

As for the calcium pills its up to you, I'd just recommend general fittness running etc, then build up your shoulders/neck by swimming when all the pain has gone.

  2. Of course you can. It's one of the most common injuries in rugby. Good medical care and a rest will have you soon back in your boots.

  3. You will definately be able to play again.

This type of injury is common in rugby and if treated correctly should result in a 100% recovery.

  4. Probably not before Feb/ March... my friend had a broken collar bone and he broke it sometime in July and tried to play in March the following year but it gave him serious problems so he decided to not play further that year, rest it, speak to your doctor about how long it will take and the do as he says.

Calcium tablets will help, but they are not going to make the bone as strong as before, not even close...

  5. I've broken both collarbones, one very seriously, and after 6-8 weeks was back at it. Certainly you'll be fine by Ferbuary, the bone actually heals stronger than it was before, so don't worry about it. It sounds like the guys who broke it in July and couldn't play the following spring might be better suited for a different sport!
