Question:

Broken MTB Chains (3) - why?

I have been mountain biking for >15 years now. In the past 3 months, I have broken three chains. Two were Srams, and I just broke a Dura-Ace CN7701 on about it's third ride.

Last year I changed my chainrings and freewheel. THe rings are Race-Face, the freewheel is a SHimano. I have XT shifters and derailleurs.

I don't know if I have EVER broken a chain before so this is confusing to me.

Now I am riding like a pu$$y because I am afraid of breaking another.

Anyone have any ideas?

  1. I changed my chain a couple weeks ago, and noted in the instructions that it was desirable to install the chain in a certain direction so the connecting rivet would be strongest.  Maybe you or whoever did your chain put it in the opposite way?

  2. That's really wierd. In the future its best to change both the sprockets and chain simultaneously. do your sprockets match the chain. since u've been riding so long I expect u know not to cross chain.

    Sorry 4 u'r loss!
