Question:

Broken Receiver - how to fix?

Hi

I have a JVC receiver with a broken output jack. The Right Speaker jack was working fine, and one day just seemed to go out. When I connect the speaker to that jack, you can hear the audio, but it's very light - no where close to matching the volume of the other speakers.

Any suggestions how to fix this? -

PS yes, the balance is correct - if I isolate the Right speaker the volume is just not as loud as it should be. And I've hooked that speaker up to the Left jack and it worked fine - so I don't think it's a speaker issue.

How can I fix the jack?

thanks!

  1. I would remove the cover such that you can see the inside portion of the broken terminal. It may not be too difficult to install a new one. You will need a soldering iron. If you cannot get a replacement terminal, solder one end of a short piece of wire, then twist the speaker wire to the other end.

  2. Maybe go to an electronics store that sells parts and see if you can find a new one.  It will be easy to install if you read the directions and take a photo or draw a little detailed diagram of the wiring first.

  3. Saying that your audio is poor because the jack is broken is kinda like saying your car won't start because your key quit working. Unless there are visible signs of damage, you most likely have a problem in one of the stages of your amplifier circuit.

Unless you are willing to purchase a service manual and you have the expertise to troubleshoot it yourself, you'll have to find a service center to repair it for you. I wouldn't think it would be too expensive.
