Broken clutch after 2 months?

The other day a friend of mine had a problem in his 2 month old company car. According to him, his car went into high revs and it lost most power. Then smoke came from under the bonnet.

He called a mechanic who said that the clutch was worn out.

Is that possible?? After two months??? The guy is not a racer kind of guy, he drives by the limits…

  1. A clutch can fail the same day it's put in. It has little to do with time. A company car with a clutch? Very unusual. Very unusual for clutches to be covered under warranty. They'll wiggle out of it somehow is my guess.

  2. Something isn't right. It should be under warranty if the vehicle is only two months old. Have your friend take it back to the dealership for warranty service.

  3. Well, it has happened, therefore it's possible.

What he describes is exactly what happens when you burn a clutch, except if it was me i'd not let the car revs go up, I'd see it's not going forward so I'd hit the emergency lights and pull up by the curb.

  4. It's possible if it was a mitsu. Mitsubishi cars come with one weak clutch. Sounds like he smoked the clutch. Even if it's new, it was not properly broken in.
