Broken kick starter spring?

Question

I have a 87 xl600, how do you get the new spring to titen up when installing the spring? I installed it and it will not spring back. I know I need a book but I have'nt got it yet. Thank you.

There's nothing complcated about it.

Perhaps you've installed the spring in the wrong direction.

Remove the spring and insert it into the shaft from the other side (rotate the shaft 180 degrees).
