  1. Not to risk any chances, just go out and buy a new charger if you can. If their not in stores nearby, then buy one off of compaq's website. Just don't use your laptop a lot while waiting for the charger.

  3. Important to check the output voltage.  If they're the same, it'll probably be OK.  However, if I were you, I wouldn't fool around with it.  It should be possible to get a replacement Compaq charger pretty easily.

  4. I'm assuming that the plugs are physically the same on both adapters (chargers). There are few things to look for on the two adapters to make sure the HP adapter will work. These will be written on the adapters.

    1. OUTPUT VOLTAGE: Must be the same on both chargers (example: "Output DC 9V). Make sure they both say "DC" and the number (in this example: "9") must be the same.

    2. POLARITY: Must be the same on both chargers or definite damage will result! This is the polarity (+ & -) of the plug that goes into the computer. There should be a symbol with a "+" and a "-" on it, and from the "+" and "-" there are lines connected to what looks like a "C" with a dot in the middle. If the "+" is connected to the dot in the middle of the "C" and the "-" is connected to the "C" itself, then the adapter is said to be "center positive." If the "-" is connected to the dot, then the adapter is "center negative." You must make sure that the symbols on both of the adapters ARE THE SAME, ie. both adapters must be "center-positive" or "center-negative."

    3. OUTPUT AMPERAGE (AMPS): May be written alongside the OUTPUT VOLTAGE as a number followed by the letter "A" or by the letters "mA" (examples: "9V 1.5A"  or "9V 1500mA"). This is the maximum current, in amps, that the adapter can supply. If this number is GREATER on the HP adapter, you can SAFELY use it on your Compaq. If the number is lower on the HP, then DO NOT use the adapter---the adapter cannot supply the correct amperage and may burn out (sooner or later).

    So:

** Do not use the adapter if 1, 2, AND 3 are not met.**

** Do not use the adapter if you are unsure about 1, 2, or 3. **

Usually, adapters fail because the cord leading to the plug gets flexed and re-flexed over many, many times and eventually the wire(s) break inside the insulation. If you know of someone who does repairs on electronics and can handle a soldering iron, then they should be able to diagnose this very quickly and, if it is the case, repair it very quickly.

  5. Compaq is now HP so her charger should b fine with ur laptop.  Most of the time as long as its fits and the output voltage on the charger matches the input voltage on the laptop it will work.  Manufactures usually make the adapter differently so it cant fit into another laptop if its not going to work or would burn it out.
