Bromine in swimming pool?

Hi, I am allergic to chlorine, it gives me a bad headache and I get extremely tired. Can I use bromine in a pool? would it irrate eyes if opened under water? or is it more harmful to swallow?

  1. Yes. You can go directly to bromine in a previously chlorinated pool when the existing chlorine levels have dropped to 1.0 or below. You'll need to swap out your existing chlorine feeder to a bromine one. Make sure that you're ok with bromine first. Some people can't swim chlorine, some can't swim bromine. Some can't deal with either. Myself, I can't do bromine. It does to me what chlorine does to you.

    As for it's effects on eye irritation, that depends on the person. Again...for me, it feels like someone using sandpaper on my eyeballs but for someone ok with bromine it'll be fine. As for swallowing brominated water..no different than chlorinated water. Try not to, but if it happens, it isn't going to harm you. Just leaves an after taste.


  2. You can use bromine in a pool. Every pool I've swum in in Canada has used it, as well as a few pools in the US. It is rumored that it is actually easier on the skin. As for eye irritation, just use goggles. That will prevent irritation in chlorine and bromine.
