Broncos add Fargas to depleted backfield
The Denver Broncos have added some more insurance to their backfield. The team signed veteran running back Justin Fargas as they wait for Correll Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno to recover from their injuries.
The two backs suffered injuries on the Broncos first day of camp as Buckhalter injured his back and Moreno hurt his hamstring. The team signed former Titan LenDale White, but he was sidelined with a leg injury.
Fargas has spent seven years of his career with division rivals, the Oakland Raiders: "After seven years in Oakland, that chapter's done," Fargas said. "This is a new beginning for me and I'm looking forward to it."
The 30-year-old veteran spent most of his first practice with the team observing from the sidelines. Fargas underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in March. The former Raider explained how he felt now being a Bronco.
"It's a little different, but it feels good," he said. "It's always been a great rivalry and the Broncos have always been an organization I've respected. And to be a part of it now and have this opportunity feels good."
Fargas was released by the Raiders in March after failing a physical due to his injured knee. The Raiders opted to release Fargas rather than pay a $1.7 million bonus he was due. Fargas has had many injury problems, but he has proven to be a force when he’s healthy. In seven seasons, he rushed for 3369 yards in limited action. He has averaged 4.1 yards a carry and scored 10 touchdowns in his career.
Raiders coach Tom Cable often praised Fargas for his strong work-ethic and his unselfish attitude. Fargas has proven to be a physical running back as well at 6ft 1in and 220lb. He’s a power runner and never shies away from contact.
Fargas said he has no hard feelings toward his former team: "No animosity, but obviously you want to go beat them," he said. "But there are a whole lot of other teams we have to worry about, too."
Fargas shared carries in Oakland with Darren McFadden and Michael Bush and will most likely continue to share carries in the crowded Denver backfield, once it is healthy again.
"That's one thing I'm looking forward to, is working with the backs. I'm not here to work against anybody," Fargas said. "I know the better you are as a corps, the better the offence is."
