Broncos capitalize on mistakes to beat Seahawks 31-10
The Seattle Seahawks never recovered from turnovers early in the game, and fell to the Broncos 31-14 at Mile High Stadium in Denver.
The Seahawks opened the game with an impressive drive, spanning 64 yards, and chewing up over five minutes of the clock, before Matt Hasselbeck was intercepted by Champ Bailey.
Pinned deep in their own half after the interception, the Broncos managed a few first downs before punting from their own 34-yard-line. A punt that was muffed by the Seahawks and recovered by the Broncos.
These kinds of things are not easy to overcome, especially when you're on the road, and if you're the Seahawks.
Denver would score on the ensuing possession, Kyle Orton finding Eddie Royal for a 13-yard touchdown, and the Broncos never looked back.
Orton had another good game under centre, finishing 25/35 for 307 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He helped take the Broncos to 1-1, and reminded everyone that Tim Tebow isn't going to be the quarterback anytime soon.
Another Broncos rookie was on the field, and made quite an impression. Demaryius Thomas, the Broncos first round selection, the first receiver taken, and the man anointed to replace Brandon Marshall, led all receivers with eight receptions for
97 yards and a touchdown.
Thomas was making his Bronco debut after sitting out the preseason and the season opener with an foot injury.
The Seahawks probably didn't have a lot of film to study, but as safety Lawyer Milloy said, "I definitely know who he is now. I saw him on the field a lot making big, big catches."
Thomas made an impression with the people standing on his sideline too, most importantly his quarterback and his coach.
"He's a big, physical guy. He can really run," Orton said. "There aren't a lot of things he can't do."
Sentiments that were echoed by coach Josh Mcdaniels, who still thinks there's more to come from the talented rookie.
"I think there's some bigger receivers in this league that really their route tree is really limited. And we've never considered him one of those players," McDaniels said. "He's still working off a little more limited menu than the other guys because he
hasn't been out there as much."
After a surprising win over division rivals, the San Fransisco 49ers, in the opener, the Seahawks were brought back down to earth by a Broncos team that feasted on turnovers.
On top of the muffed punt, Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck threw three interceptions, two of them coming when the Seahawks were in scoring range.
