Bronte Campbell clinches Girls 50m freestyle title: Day six – 2011 FINA World Junior Championships
Bronte Campbell of Australia clinched the title of Girls 50m freestyle on the final day of the 3rd World Junior Swimming Championships, organised the by Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA), in Lima, Peru.
The Australian teenager impressed the crowd by owning the crown of the 50m event in a championship record time of 25.22 seconds. Campbell’s time was only 0.06 seconds beneath her own previous championship mark of 25.28 seconds, clocked by her in the semi-finals
of the same event to earn the fastest qualification spot in the final. Nevertheless, the gold winning effort of 16-year-old Campbell was 1.49 seconds slower than the world mark of 23.73 seconds, made by Britta Steffen of Germany at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The gold medallist was followed by Lia Neal of United States, who remained just 0.08 seconds slower than Campbell and reached the podium for second position, with a timing of 25.30 seconds. Chanta Van Landeghem of Canada was the third position holder of
the event, as she stayed only 0.05 seconds behind Neal and occupied the bronze medal, with a timing of 25.35 seconds.
The bronze medallist was trailed by Kristen Vredeveld of United States, who remained 0.26 seconds slower from overwhelming the efforts of her former finisher and ended fourth with a timing of 25.61 seconds. Vredeveld was chased by Nadiya Koba of Ukraine,
who claimed fifth fastest spot of the swim, by submitting a time of 25.80 seconds.
In the meantime, Beryl Gastaldello of France secured sixth fastest spot of the event, as she reported on the wall in a time of 25.93 seconds. Similarly, Carolina Bergamaschi of Brazil remained 0.29 seconds behind her preceding swimmer and clocked a time
of 26.22 seconds. Mao Kawakami of Japan was the last swimmer of the event, as she settled eighth after she touched the finishing wall with a timing of 26.23 seconds.
Campbell expressed happiness over her championship record improving effort, while the winners were awarded medals and accolades for the wonderful swims after the session.
