Brook Macdonald wins the MTB Cross Country World Cup in Val D’Isere 2012
Brook Macdonald of Team MS Mondraker Team secured his first ever victory at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup event after his outrageous performance during the race.
The Kiwi crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 0:02:19.48 and restricted the race favourites.
British cyclist Gee Atherton occupied the second spot with a total deficit of 0:00:00.50 while Josh Bryceland Greg Minnaar of Team Santa Cruz and Aaron Gwin of Team Trek World Racing achieved the next three spots in the respective order.
Aaron Gwin and his usual rival Greg Minnaar had totally occupied the past two versions of the race but Brook managed to get through the defences of the two in-form cyclists.
"I can't even explain how I feel," said MacDonald. "I had a solid run, no mistakes, it was one of those runs I was just pumped for”.
“I am over the moon about this one. My early season has been a big struggle”.
“I was at a point where I was hating riding. So I changed a few things on my bike, and it has all paid off”.
"With the altitude, and being only two and a half minutes, you are just pushing the whole way”.
Brook noted that he was really watchful during the race as there was no room for mistakes which ultimately helped him with the victory.
The four-time world cup winner Aaron Gwin was not really disappointed with his fifth place finish.
“I have no excuses; I had a pretty good run. For how I felt I am happy”, he cited after crossing the finish line.
The American was looking good right through the end of the race but he got a little carried away in the final few kilometres which cost him an important victory.
Team GT Factory Racing achieved the top spot at the team’s category with 99 UCI points while MS Mondraker Team, Team Santa Cruz Syndicate, Team Scott 11 and Team Commencal / Riding Addiction holding the next four positions.
Aaron Gwin still holds the first spot after the sixth round of the Elite men Individual downhill World Cup Standings with 1260 points.
Greg Minnaar is 260 points behind at the second position while Gee Atherton, Steve Smith and Danny Hart holding the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
