Brooklyn Nets: Franchise players in each NBA Team – NBA Feature Part 3
Brooklyn Nets – Deron Williams
Deron Williams was the most prized possession of this year’s free agency.
The point guard was the centre of attention of the 2010-11 NBA champions Dallas Mavericks and the Brooklyn Nets, his franchise last season. After a lot of deliberation, Williams opted to sign a five year deal with the Nets mainly
because of the improvements they brought to the franchise.
He will now be surrounded by the likes of Joe Johnson, Gerald Wallace, Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries, and with such a strong roster, the Nets are already be the biggest threat to Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference next season.
Williams averaged 21 points and 8.7 assists last season and is no doubt one of the premiere point guards in the league. But, his ability to lead the team does pose a lot of questions. He was at the helm of Nets affairs last season
as well, but the team finished with a poor 22-44 record and was out of the playoff contention even before the last one third of the season started.
It can be argued that Williams did not have much help last season with Brook Lopez injured for majority of it, but then what is the point of being superstar when you cannot carry your team to at least a playoff qualifying record
and that too in the less competitive Eastern Conference.
The irony of the whole situation was that the Utah Jazz, Williams’ former franchise made put up a spirited display and beat competition from the likes of Houston Rockets and  Phoenix Suns to claim the post season last spot in the
West.
With so much money attention and effectively the future of the Nets invested in the point guard, it is high time for Williams to live up to his potential and start winning on a more consistent basis.
He has all the help he could need this season and based on the trend, the Nets are bound to add more steel to their roster next season, or even before the mid season trade window expires, depending upon how the Nets fare till that
point.
