Brooklyn Nets mark arrival on the NBA stage with a bang; Future still unclear for the highly paid roster – NBA Feature Part 3
The Brooklyn Nets spent a huge figure in the vicinity of $300 million in the acquisition and signing of just four players, making a statement in the NBA and getting everyone’s attention. It was the statement they were trying to
make and the kind of start they were hoping for as they entered their new home. The Nets knew that playing in New York, they would be compared to the Knicks and a rivalry was only natural.
Hence, they packed their roster to contend with the Knicks team and give them a tough time. It was a battle for supremacy in the biggest city of America, and the Nets looked to be winning. They added C.J. Watson from the Chicago
Bulls and veteran Jerry Stackhouse to strengthen the roster and fill up some voids in the team.
The spending spree by the Nets and the seemingly unlimited budget by their Russian owner did manage to create a great deal of hype around the team as they prepare to open at their new arena in November.
However, whether the Nets were successful in building a team capable of success solely on the court is one question that still needs to be answered. After all the money spent and the publicity achieved, it is still unclear whether
the Nets are in fact a contender in the Eastern Conference.
Deron Williams is a great player, who just came back from London after winning the gold medal at the London Olympics with team U.S.A. However, make no mistake about it; he is not a Derrick Rose or Chris Paul. He is not the type
of player who can single handedly change the fortunes of franchise and guide them to 50 plus win seasons. If he were, he would have done so by now. He is certainly moving in that direction, but at this point, he has not proven himself as a perennial franchise
player.
Joe Johnson is a quality shooting guard, but everyone knows that the reason Atlanta wanted to trade him was because he was a bad contract for them. Too much money for the role he was doing on the team. And now the Brooklyn Nets
have picked up the bad contract. Gerald Wallace is a good forward who can score on a consistent basis and may be the strongest link in the team. Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries are both talented players but are not playoff competitors.
