Brooklyn Nets sign Gerald Wallace as they look forward to bigger moves – NBA News
The free agency season officially kick started on Sunday morning and as anticipated, the Brooklyn Nets are already making bumper moves with even bigger motives.
The Nets have always remained under the shadows of the more famous New York Knicks. However, with a new arena in Brooklyn waiting to host the Nets first game next season, and a change of name and uniforms, the Nets are looking
to become dominant in the NBA.
Success and dominance requires star basketball players and the Nets know that fully well. After having successfully built a new arena, the Nets management is now looking to build a solid roster that will make them a franchise to
be reckoned with in the NBA. And they have started off that roster building by reaching an agreement with Gerald Wallace over a four year contract.
Multiple sources have confirmed that the Nets and Wallace have reached an agreement on a four year contract worth $40 million. Wallace will officially sign the contract on July 11th when the deadline on transactions
is lifted.
Wallace was acquired by the Nets last season in a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers. The 6 foot 7 forward averaged 15.2 points and 6.8 rebounds in the 16 games he played with the Nets last season.
After having locked down Wallace for the next four seasons, the Nets will move on to more important concerns. Their star player Deron Williams in on the free agency market this year and the Nets have been trying their best to resign
him.
The Nets want Williams to be their franchise player. The one guard had said during the regular season that he was looking to move to another team in the offseason, but the Nets are making that decision increasingly more difficult
for him. They also have eyes on Dwight Howard who has stated on a number of occasions that he wants to be traded to the Nets. His arrival could very well see Williams resigning with the Nets to team up with the All Star centre.
However, Orlando Magic would like to trade Howard to a team that could give them something worthwhile in return. They are also in rebuilding mode and know that Howard is an asset who could be used to land good players in return,
players that would strengthen the Magic roster. Hence, they are in talks with many teams and a possible trade with Houston and the Los Angeles Lakers has been speculated.
Williams is scheduled to meet with the Dallas Mavericks and then the Nets on Monday. The Nets are also scheduled to meet with Steve Nash, who is also a free agent this summer. Nash is the back up for the Nets in case Williams decides
to move elsewhere. They have reportedly had trade talks for Joe Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks and Luis Scola of the Houston Rockets, though no additional information is available on those two trade options.
Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo is also on the Brooklyn watch list, but they will wait for a word from Williams before targeting him.
All in all, the Nets are ready to make some big moves this offseason in order to strengthen their roster for next year when they move into their new home at Barclays Arena in Brooklyn. With the way they are going, it seems like
they will have a good roster set up by the time the next season commences.
