Brooklyn Nets star Deron Williams explains Russia trip – NBA Update
Deron Williams has explained that his trip to Russia had nothing to do with his future. The Brooklyn Nets super star has been subject of much speculation as the free agency approaches, with him being the most sought after player in this year’s agency.
Williams said that his trip to Russia was not linked to a decision on his future, although he did meet Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov. He also crossed paths with General Manager Billy King.
Deron though said that he was in Turkey, where he had played this year when the NBA was in lockout due to the Labour dispute. His long-time teammate at the Utah Jazz Andrei Kirilenko had invited Williams to Russia on numerous occasions and that was the reason
the Brooklyn guard made the trip.
"People say I'm staying here for sure because I went to Russia," Williams said. "Yeah, I went to Russia. I've never been to Russia. A.K. (Andrei Kirilenko)'s been telling me to come to Russia for the last six years, so, I went to Russia. It was close to
Turkey. I went to Turkey because I love Turkey; I played there for three months. I wanted to see my teammates. I wanted to check out some games, so I went to Istanbul."
Deron’s explanation though is not likely to ease speculation surrounding his future. The press has been busy plotting out a future course for the super star ever since he declared that he will be opting out from his deal with the Nets this summer.
Williams stands to get a much better contract by opting out, and that is the major reason he has cited. He could re-sign with the Nets and earn a bumper contract, but he hasn’t made a final decision yet. The Dallas Mavericks remain a key contender for his
signature as the club have cleared up plenty of salary cap and are reportedly interested in bringing in the point guard.
They have the additional advantage of being situated in Williams’s home city, which the player will be visiting again soon.
"I'm from there," Williams said. "My mom lives there. My brother lives there. My aunt, my uncles live there. I'm going there to have my son's birthday party. I'm going Thursday through Tuesday."
