Brooklyn Nets star Deron Williams still undecided over future – NBA Update
The Brooklyn Nets, formerly New Jersey Nets, are fretting over the future of super star point guard Deron Williams. The playmaker has declared that he will opt out of his current deal with the franchise and enter free agency this summer.
Williams however explained that the decision to enter free agency does not mean his career with the Nets is over. The guard just did it because it made more sense financially.
That is not to say that he will definitely comeback with the Nets, even though the financial rewards would be great. Deron could be offered a five year deal by the Nets according to the rules of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, longer and more lucrative
than what any other team in the NBA can offer.
The guard though also wants to be somewhere he can challenge for the highest honours in the league and therefore finances alone will not influence his decision. He explained that any speculation with regards his destination will be off the mark, because
he hasn’t made up his mind yet.
"I want to reiterate, I don't know what I'm doing next year," Williams said. "Still. Nobody does but me. Not even my mom, my brother, my uncle, my cousin. I haven't talked to anybody about where I'm going next year."
"I just hate that people think they know where I'm going, because I don't know where I'm going," said Williams. "So there's no way for them to know, or assume that I'm going to Dallas or that I'm staying here. I don't know. There could be another team that
comes into the picture."
Williams though is still being strongly linked with the Dallas Mavericks. The player is a Dallas native and has family in the city, which is a big plus point. Brooklyn head coach Avery Johnson has already said he fears that the Mavericks could lure his star
away.
For their part, the Mavericks have also given strong indications that they will be courting Deron in the free agency. The Mavs have plenty of cap space after off loading some players last summer and still more running out of contracts this time around.
Add to it the fact that they still have NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki on their books; Williams will surely be tempted to pack his bags and head to Dallas.
