Brooklyn Nets sting New York Knicks 96-89 in overtime: NBA Recap
The Brooklyn Nets took on the New York Knicks for the first time in Brooklyn and won 96-89 in overtime here at the Barclays Center on Monday night. The Knicks gave another strong performance but it was not going to be their night,
as Brooklyn drew the first blood in the first of many games to come in this rivalry.
Brook Lopez led the Nets with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Deron Williams posted 16 points and dished out 14 assists. Gerald Wallace seems to have found his groove recently and finished off with 16 points and 5 rebounds while
Jerry Stackhouse came off the bench to collect 14 points.
Carmelo Anthony was hot as ever. He scored a game high 35 points to go along with 13 rebounds, but missed what could have been a game winner in the dying seconds of regulation. Tyson Chandler supported him well with 28 points and
10 rebounds but no other Knick made it in the double scoring figures.
It was a close game as no team led the other by more than 7 throughout. The Knicks were up 8-5 after a Chandler dunk shot early in the first period. Moments later, Ronnie Brewer nailed a three pointer to put New York up 11-7. But
the Nets replied with a 6-0 run and the score was tied on 13 all. The Nets scored more baskets in the later part of the period and were leading 26-23 by the end of the quarter.
An Anthony dunk shot tied the score on 31 in the early goings of the second period. Nets then scored the next 4 points before the Knicks replied by taking 5 straight that put them up by 36-35. The Knicks were leading 47-45 as the
teams headed into their locker rooms.
It was still a two point game on 51-53 after a Lopez deuce for the Nets early in the third period. Anthony made two back to back jumpers for the Knicks to put them up 57-53 before the Nets evened it out on 57. A 7 nil quick burst
left New York leading by 66-59 before the Nets came back hard later in the period and a 9-1 run put them up by 68-67 after three.
The fourth period was relatively cold with a total of 33 points scored in it. Again both teams were neck and neck. With nearly 24 seconds left, Lopez had a chance to give Brooklyn a one point lead. He however split his pair of
free throws and tied the score on 84. Anthony then missed a jumper and Williams responded with a missed long three, taking the game into overtime.
The Nets took control of the game in overtime. An 8-0 burst capped off by a Wallace driving layup put them up 92-86 and there was no looking back as they went on to win 96-89.
